Many of the men and women who served in the military over the years were exposed to a deadly enemy known as asbestos. In many cases, asbestos didn’t make its attack until years later. Until 1978, asbestos was widely used in military vessels, installations, and aircraft. Building materials, deck tile, electronics, ventilation systems, boilers, turbines, weapons systems, wire wrapping, wall insulation – asbestos was everywhere in those days. And since the use of asbestos coincided with the massive growth in manpower caused by the Cold War, more warriors than ever before were exposed to the deadly mineral. As a result, millions of veterans today have a higher level of asbestos exposure than those who did not serve.
