Stage II

Stage II of the TNM mesothelioma staging involves the spread of malignant cells in the pleura on one side of the chest to nearby lymph nodes next to the lung on the same side. It may also have spread into the lung, pericardium or diaphragm on the same side. As damaged cells within the pleura become malignant, they grow uncontrollably, producing tumors. These tumors continue to enlarge, releasing cancerous cells into blood, lymphatic fluid and other tissues.

As the malignant cells spread, they take root in the lung, the pericardium (lining of the protective sac surrounding the heart) and in the lymph nodes. The pleura on the opposite side of the chest wall may also be affected.

The enlargement of tumors and spread of malignant cells into adjacent tissues is the aspect of the disease that defines TNM Stage II mesothelioma.
